Police were called to the Whakatane Amphitheatre beside the Whakatane River today after reports of a sudden death.
A police spokeswoman confirmed the incident.
A person walking in the area, who did not wish to be named, said police were looking at an area close to the miniature train tunnel behind the ampitheatre as she walked past.
She said police tape had been in place when she began her walk but was being removed at about 1.30. Bits of foliage were also removed from the area by police.
