Sea fog and volcanic gases from Whakaari / White Island have created a volcanic fog phenomena, along the eastern Bay of Plenty coast today.

Whakatāne residents reported they could smell sulphur and there was low visibility of the island, prompting concerns of an eruption. GNS says there has not been an eruption.

But sulphuric volcanic gases form the island have mixed with atmospheric moisture, forming an aerosol. Light northerly winds have driven this onshore.

This fog can makes eyes water and sting and those with respiratory health issues should be cautious. It can also be a hazard for road, air and ocean traffic.
