A man has been arrested this morning following a Police pursuit last night.

The drama unfolded around 7.30 pm when the vehicle fled from the scene of a routine traffic stop on River Road in Kawerau.

A Police spokesperson said a pursuit was initiated when the vehicle failed to stop when signalled to do so.

Spikes were successfully deployed and the vehicle crashed into a paddock a short time later on East Bank Road. The offender fled on foot.

With the assistance of the Police Eagle Helicopter, Police arrested a 28-year-old man, this morning.

He has been charged with dangerous driving, failing to stop, two counts of unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition among other charges.

He is due to appear in the Whakatane District Court tomorrow.
