A magnitude 3.2 earthquake struck just before 10.45pm last night.

The quake was centered 25 km west of Whakatane and 6km deep according to GeoNet.

Residents in Onepu, Edgecumbe and Kawerau reported feeling the sharp jolt on social media.

“That jolt was not weak we are by Onepu shook the whole house so scary 4th one today”  Nikki Parsons-Lees posted to Facebook.

A number of smaller earthquakes have been reported to GeoNet in the past 24 hours.

On September 2 a 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck near Te Araroa triggering tsunami warnings for much of the country including the Eastern Bay of Plenty.
